Overview

The 1950s Town Hall underwent a full refurbishment recently. Transparency of the political process and access to the local government was achieved by removing the solid walls around the council chamber and inserting new glass screens. A central lightwell was infilled with a glass bridge to create a break out space and link the committee rooms with the chamber. A sense of civic pride has been restored in this East End community, which has suffered with problems of local industrial decline, and the refurbishment is at the heart of the Borough’s recent regeneration programme. Significant investment has gone into the cycling facilities which are of a goof quality.
